Caroline Tao Niang Schonert

Caro

Production Designer (Dipl.), Architect (M.A.), Visual Developer

Studying and working in both film and architecture, I have learnt that for me the key to success lies in the combination of two skillsets: that of an artist and that of a manager. One for creativity, imagination, atmosphere – and one for structure, clarity, and order. The artist in me can develop ideas freely with an open mind while working in a structured and analytical manner at the same time, always with a view to practical realization. My favorite challenges are those that motivate and inspire me to push or redefine the limits of feasibility. I consider it one of my greatest strengths to be able to bring order to creative chaos and direct it into structured channels without stifling it - whether it is my own or someone else‘s.

Production Designer, Concept Illustrator, World Creator

With many years of experience working in independent film, commercial work, TV/web series, and music videos, I am confident in any position in Art Department from Production Assistant to Production Designer. I work well with a team and individually and I meet each new challenge with positivity, attention to detail, out-of-the-box-thinking, and industriousness.
Though born and raised in Alaska for 30 years, I found my home in Portland, Oregon where I enjoy making art and playing outside with my partner and two dogs.

Production Designer, Interactive Designer, Performer

I focus my work around two things-  1. get people to engage in a state of play and 2. cultivate a connected community through art. I am deeply committed to creating and producing spellbinding, thought-provoking content and immersive spaces/events that tap into the nuances of culture, allowing people to better examine themselves so that we can all grow, learn, and laugh from ourselves.

I live for collaboration! I love working with teams and believe that many minds make magic happen.

My work has included producing independent feature films, sketch comedy, live shows, circus performances, memorable and inquisitive characters, festivals, and immersive art spaces. I have performed since childhood and have extensive training as an improviser and Sketch writer/performer (Upright Citizens Brigade, The PIT, Deep End Theater, Gotham Writers, The Story Studio NYC, Kickstand Comedy). I trained at the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) for physical theater, Chinese pole and act creation. I have directed and taught theater and circus for over ten years (Newport Performing Arts Center, New England Center for Circus Arts, Theater Adventure Vermont, Echo Theater). In my work, I pull inspiration from my years of organic farming; love and reverence for the natural world,  permaculture, biomimicry, and psychedelics; training as a circus artist and competitive athlete; years spent doing improvisational theater; and all the weird jobs and hobbies in between. The unifying thing between all these disciplines? Following my joy and play. And proving that they may be the medicine we all need in the world right now.
